Advanced endoscopic treatment for bile duct and pancreatic conditions performed by Dr. Jing Tong, a therapeutic endoscopy specialist in Flushing, Queens.
ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is a specialized endoscopic procedure that combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy (X-ray imaging) to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts, pancreatic duct, and gallbladder. A specially designed endoscope called a duodenoscope is passed through the mouth into the duodenum, where the bile and pancreatic ducts open.
ERCP is one of the most technically demanding procedures in gastroenterology, requiring extensive specialized training. Dr. Jing Tong is one of the few gastroenterologists in the United States who holds a therapeutic endoscopy license, making him exceptionally qualified to perform this complex procedure. His training at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine provided him with the expertise needed for even the most challenging cases.
Unlike diagnostic tests that only identify problems, ERCP allows Dr. Tong to treat conditions during the same procedure -- removing gallstones from the bile duct, placing stents to relieve blockages, performing sphincterotomy (widening the bile duct opening), and taking biopsies of suspicious tissue. This dual capability makes ERCP an invaluable tool that can often prevent the need for surgery.
Gallstones stuck in the common bile duct
Narrowing of the bile or pancreatic ducts
Gallstone-related pancreatic inflammation
Yellowing caused by blocked bile ducts
Diagnosis and stenting for biliary tumors
Post-surgical bile duct leakage repair
Dr. Tong reviews your imaging studies, lab results, and medical history to plan the procedure. You will fast for 6-8 hours beforehand. Blood work may be checked to assess your clotting function.
Deep sedation or general anesthesia is administered for your comfort. ERCP is performed while you are completely comfortable and unaware of the procedure.
The duodenoscope is guided to the ampulla of Vater (where bile and pancreatic ducts meet the intestine). A thin catheter is inserted into the duct and contrast dye is injected to visualize the duct system under X-ray.
Based on findings, Dr. Tong performs the necessary treatment: sphincterotomy to widen the duct opening, stone extraction using balloons or baskets, stent placement to relieve blockages, or tissue biopsy for diagnosis.
You will be monitored in recovery for 1-2 hours. Dr. Tong will discuss the results and next steps with you and your family. Most patients go home the same day.
